The fire that reignited on Saturday morning in the French department of Landes has forced another 100 residents and holidaymakers near the municipality of Luglon to evacuate, according to local authorities.
The fire has been raging since Thursday and has engulfed 15.8 square kilometres of forest. A total of 650 people have been evacuated. According to the prefect of the region, the government has been asked to send a Chinook helicopter that Australia sent to France to help with water bombing.
Spreads quickly during the night
In a nature park in eastern Belgium, near the border with Germany, a fire has destroyed at least 16 square kilometres of forest since it broke out on Friday, according to authorities. The fire spread rapidly overnight into Saturday.
Reinforcements in the form of firefighters from all over Belgium and Germany have been called in, but water-bombing aircraft and helicopters have also been mobilised within the framework of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
Protracted extinguishing work
In the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which borders Belgium, a fire is raging that is described as probably the largest in the state's history. In the Eifel region, 1,400 firefighters are fighting to bring the extensive fire under control, which has forced nearly 2,000 people to flee their homes in the municipality of Hürtgenwald.
Firefighting in the Eifel is expected to last for several days, reports German media company ZDF.
In Serbia, authorities also announced late Friday that they are fighting 25 serious forest fires, including one that has destroyed 25 square kilometres of land in a national park near Belgrade.
