Tech giant Meta may not stop competing chatbots from operating on the company's messaging service WhatsApp, the European Commission has announced.

The EU is reacting to rule changes made by Meta in January, which reportedly block other companies' AI technology from interacting via WhatsApp.

An investigation into violations of EU competition law has been initiated and has now provisionally concluded that the American company Meta is violating the law.

EU Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera announced that the Commission has informed Meta that "temporary measures" are being considered to ensure that the market is not seriously harmed.

The tech giant rejects the warning.

"In fact, there is no reason for the EU to intervene," a Meta spokesperson said, according to AFP.

The company claims that the Commission is acting illogically and that there are many different AI options to choose from.
