The EU Commission proposes prolonged protection for Ukrainians in the EU until March 4, 2027.
"Since 2022, we have provided protection to those fleeing Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and we will continue to do so. Together with Ukraine, we are also paving the way for people to be able to return and rebuild their homes when it is safe," writes President Ursula von der Leyen in a press release.
The war in Ukraine has led the EU to use its rules on temporary protection for the first time, giving Ukrainians the opportunity to live and reside in Europe. In parallel with the extension, the Commission is now urging member states to initiate voluntary return assistance and information centers to prepare for the day when more Ukrainians can return home.
