Thursday's proposal for a new directive to combat arms smuggling includes calls for more coordinated penalties across EU countries for arms smuggling, and for forging or removing serial numbers and other markings. This also applies to the illegal possession and creation of 3D-printed weapon blueprints.
"By creating a common framework for weapons crimes and at the same time closing the gaps around 3D-printed weapons, we are making the EU safer," said Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner in a press release.
The proposal also includes minimum requirements for how police and other authorities register seized weapons, and improved statistics on weapons crimes.
