European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is presenting a new and comprehensive package of sanctions against Russian interests. The package is the 20th in a series following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The proposal, which was presented on Friday, includes sanctions against 43 new vessels suspected of belonging to the so-called Russian ghost fleet. If adopted, this would bring the total number of designated vessels on the sanctions list to 640.

The EU also wants to introduce a ban on the maritime transport of Russian crude oil, and measures aimed at reducing Russian oil revenues.

Also included are 20 regional Russian banks, as well as import bans into the EU on metals, minerals and chemicals from Russia.

Export bans from EU countries to Russia are being expanded to include technology that can be used in warfare.
