Work will begin to develop a recommendation to EU countries on the issue in response to a citizens' initiative.
"This has no place in our Union. The EU proudly stands behind the LGBTQI community," President Ursula von der Leyen wrote in a press release.
"This is a shameful and unacceptable practice. No one should have to be subjected to it. Conversion therapy is based on a lie - that LGBTQI people must be cured," Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said at a press conference in Brussels.
