In her brief statement, von der Leyen also writes that the EU "will continue to work to reach an agreement by August 1 at the latest", but that the union is simultaneously prepared to protect the EU's interests by introducing "proportionate countermeasures".

French President Emmanuel Macron writes on X that the country shares von der Leyen's "very strong dissatisfaction" with Trump's message, and that it is "more than ever" up to the EU Commission to defend European interests.

"This means in particular accelerating the preparation of credible countermeasures by mobilizing all the instruments at its disposal, including coercive measures, if no agreement is reached by August 1", writes Macron.

Mexico: Unfair agreement

Mexico, which like the EU is threatened with 30 percent tariffs from August, was informed of the planned increase on Friday in connection with talks with the USA, according to a statement from Mexico's government.

"We mentioned at the negotiating table that it was an unfair agreement and that we did not agree", the government writes in the statement according to AFP.

Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen says in a written comment to Ritzau that Trump's message is meaningless and very short-sighted.

"If it ends with very high American tariff walls against the EU, we are ready to jointly defend our interests with powerful measures if necessary. At the same time, we must keep the negotiating channels with the USA open and continue to seek solutions that benefit both parties", he says.

Media: Close to agreement

The EU and the USA are said to be close to a temporary agreement on tariffs with the USA, reported several major media outlets on Thursday. According to the Financial Times' sources, the EU was then prepared to accept general US tariffs of 10 percent during the time the talks continue.

Ursula von der Leyen said in a debate in the EU Parliament on Wednesday that they continue to work "closely with the US administration" to get a deal.
