A first meeting is held between Arab country representatives to later in the day also include diplomats from, among others, Turkey, France, EU, and UN.

Syria's new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa wants the international community to ease the sanctions against the country.

When Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock arrives in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, she says that the sanctions against Syrian officials who have committed war crimes during the civil war must be maintained.

But Germany proposes a smart approach to the sanctions, with rapid easing for the Syrian population. The Syrians now need a rapid distribution of power transition.
