"This order honors those who lead with courage, act with determination, and believe ... that peace, democracy, and dignity are not only ideals but also actions," says Speaker Roberta Metsola in a press release about the creation of the "European Order of Merit".
The idea is that up to 20 people per year – but not anyone who is currently a member of or works for any of the institutions – from 2026 will be awarded a badge, ribbon, and certificate.
Nominations can only be made by the Speaker of the EU Parliament, the President of the EU Commission, the President of the EU Council, or the EU countries' heads of state and government and speakers.
