The same rules must apply to Israel as to Russia, urge Estrella Galán from the EU parliament's left group and Jaume Asens and Vicent Marzà from the Green group.
"That a state under investigation for possible genocide crimes is allowed to use Eurovision as a platform for whitewashing and cultural normalization goes against the spirit of this event", the members write in a letter to the European radio and TV union EBU. According to the news site Politico Europe, the trio is now collecting signatures among their colleagues to put more weight behind the letter.
The letter writers refer to how Russia was shut out from Eurovision after the renewed attack on Ukraine in 2022 and also want to see new clear rules on how participants can be admitted to or excluded from the song competition in the future.
