Swedish EU members Jonas Sjöstedt and Hanna Gedin (V) join an appeal in the EU Parliament which demands that Israel be excluded from the European Song Contest.

”A country that commits a genocide with icy calculation”, writes Sjöstedt in a comment, according to Aftonbladet.

It is three Spanish members of the EU Parliament who have taken the initiative to question Israel's participation in ESC.

”That a state under investigation for possible genocide crimes is allowed to use Eurovision as a platform for whitewashing and cultural normalization goes against the spirit of this event”, write Estrella Galán, Jaume Asens and Vicent Marzà in a letter to the European radio and TV union EBU.

The letter writers refer to how Russia was shut out from Eurovision after the renewed attack on Ukraine in 2022 and also want to see new clear rules on how participants can be admitted or excluded from the song contest in the future.

The EU's foreign minister Kaja Kallas, who on Wednesday presented new proposals for sanctions and trade measures against Israel, is however hesitant to do anything other than act directly against the Israeli government.

All steps in the direction of punishing the Israeli people I think are wrong, Kallas answers on a question about Eurovision at a press conference in Brussels.
