The European Parliament voted on Thursday to pass a proposal requiring Turkey to drop the charges against Swedish journalist Joakim Medin.

The resolution calls, among other things, for "all legal proceedings against the Swedish journalist Joakim Medin and all journalists convicted for carrying out their work to be suspended."

The issue regarding the Swede was raised at the initiative of Left Party MEP Jonas Sjöstedt.

"It is unacceptable that Turkey is trying to prevent journalists inside and outside the country from doing their work," Sjöstedt says in a comment to TT.

Medin is accused of terrorism and faces several years in prison. He is being prosecuted for his journalism, but has said he has not been given any details about what he is actually accused of.
