With 416 votes in favour, 169 against and 22 abstentions, MEPs on Thursday gave the go-ahead for final negotiations on making the euro a digital currency.
This is a tool for independence and for freedom, said French liberal Gilles Boyer ahead of the vote.
Among the Swedish parties, S, M, MP, C, V and L voted yes, while SD voted no and KD abstained.
The European Commission presented its proposal for a digital euro in June 2023. Member states agreed on their position on the matter in December last year.
