"Today, we are demanding that Meta restore access to WhatsApp for competing AI assistants while we investigate whether the restrictions may violate EU competition rules," EU Commissioner Teresa Ribera wrote in a press release.
If Meta does not meet the requirements, it faces heavy fines.
The European Commission issued a warning in February in response to rule changes made by Meta in January, which resulted in other companies' AI technology being blocked from interacting with WhatsApp.
