"We note the decision from the US Supreme Court and are analyzing it carefully," writes Olof Gill, policy spokesperson for the European Commission on trade issues on X.

The EU is in close contact with the Trump administration to clarify what measures they intend to take, he said, adding: "Businesses on both sides of the Atlantic depend on stability and predictability."

Late Friday night, President Donald Trump responded to the court decision by announcing sweeping new global tariffs of 10 percent, based on separate legislation, in addition to "normal tariffs that are already being levied."

It is unclear whether Trump intends to stick to the tariff deal the EU reached with the US this summer. An emergency meeting of the European Parliament's trade committee will be held on Monday to assess the situation, its chairman Bernd Lange said.

The committee had planned to move forward with the process of approving the trade agreement with the United States, a process that was paused during Trump's now-cancelled tariff threat related to the Greenland crisis. A vote on that issue has been scheduled for Tuesday.
