The EU Commission's staff are given temporary cash cards and simple computers before trips to the USA, due to concerns about espionage, reports Financial Times.

The measure follows a policy that only applies to travel to Ukraine and China, to protect against Russian and Chinese intelligence services.

It is commissioners and high-ranking personnel who are equipped with so-called "burner phones" (disposable phones) ahead of next week's trip to the USA for the International Monetary Fund IMF's and the World Bank's spring meetings, according to the newspaper's sources.

One is worried that the USA will gain access to the commissioners' systems, says an anonymous source.

The relationship between the EU and the USA has become clearly cooler since Donald Trump took office as American president.
