EU leader António Costa has landed in India, hoping to secure a huge trade deal this week. In an obvious nod to US tariff policy, the deal is being called “the mother of all deals”.

"Council President Costa is in New Delhi for the 16th EU-India summit on Tuesday," his aide wrote on Sunday.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen simultaneously wrote on X that "we are approaching (agreement on) the free trade agreement."

“Some call it the mother of all deals,” she added, describing it as creating “a market for two billion people, accounting for a quarter of the world’s GDP.”

Both sides are keen to create new trade routes in the wake of U.S. tariffs. India is under pressure after the U.S. imposed 50 percent tariffs on the country last year.
