The EU has launched a formal investigation targeting the Chinese e-commerce site Temu. The site is suspected of not doing enough to stop the sale of illegal products to EU consumers.

The investigation may lead to large fines for Temu.

In the investigation, the EU will also assess the risks associated with the trading platform's design, which is described as potentially "addictive".

The EU Commission wants Temu to ensure that products sold on its platform meet EU requirements regarding product safety and standards, writes EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager in a comment on the decision.

"We will cooperate fully with the authorities so that our common goals – a safe and reliable market for customers – can be achieved", writes Temu in a press release.
