After India and the Mercosur countries in South America, the European Commission is now hoping for a trade agreement with Australia.

According to the news site Politico Europe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to fly to Canberra in mid-February, in the hope of finalizing an agreement.

Before that, Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic will meet with his Australian colleague Don Farrell in Brussels next week.

Negotiations on an agreement between the EU and Australia were suspended in 2023 after disagreements and resistance on both sides, particularly over the handling of agricultural goods. However, talks have gained new momentum due to the US's new inward-looking trade policy under President Donald Trump.
