"Palestine has the right to make its voice heard at the UN and in all international forums," writes Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on X.
He adds that he has spoken with Abbas to express his support after "the unjust withdrawal of visas for the Palestinian delegates".
It was on Friday that the White House announced that it is withdrawing visas for Abbas and a number of other Palestinian representatives who planned to participate in the annual UN high-level meeting in New York next month.
The unusual decision was motivated by allegations that the Palestinian Authority (PA) on the West Bank - by appealing to the international courts ICC and ICJ, and by seeking international recognition for a Palestinian state - "undermines" the prospects for peace.
EU: Reconsider the decision
Criticism of the decision also comes jointly from the EU.
We all call for a reconsideration of this decision, says the union's foreign chief Kaja Kallas at Saturday's EU meeting in Copenhagen.
France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot notes that the UN headquarters is a place that should be characterized by "neutrality" and "conflict resolution".
A meeting in the General Assembly should not be subject to any restrictions regarding access, he says in connection with the EU meeting, according to AFP.
"Leads to tensions"
Mahmud Abbas, the Palestinian leader on the West Bank, has spoken at the UN General Assembly in New York for many years. He was also expected to participate this year in a high-level meeting hosted by France and Saudi Arabia, where they will discuss a two-state solution.
Abbas' spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh urges the US to think again.
This decision only leads to increased tensions and escalation, he tells AP.
According to the UN statutes that govern the UN's activities in the US, the host country must not prevent foreign representatives from visiting the UN headquarters.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claims that they are following the statutes as the visa ban will not apply to the Palestinian Authority's permanent UN representation.
