EU Considers Processing Asylum Applications Outside Its Borders

Asylum seekers should as a general rule have their case tried outside the EU. The proposal, which the Swedish Christian Democrats have driven, has now received support from conservative and Christian democratic EPP group.

At its congress in Valencia, the EPP has adopted a proposal for stricter asylum management. Among other things, asylum seekers without permission will be stopped from entering the EU when they arrive at the border. Instead, they will be sent to a so-called safe third country with which the EU has an agreement, where the asylum application will be processed.

This is something that the Swedish Christian Democrats have been pushing for to get through.

What we envision is that the application will be processed by EU officials, at EU offices where EU law applies, says EU parliamentarian Alice Teodorescu Måwe (KD).

The KD envisions that this will be combined with an expanded quota system where member states themselves will determine how many quota refugees they want and can receive.

It cuts off the opportunity for smugglers to act as a third hand and highlights member states' ability to integrate, says Teodorescu Måwe.

However, the EPP resolution does not include any details. The proposal will now be further processed in the EU system.

EPP parties govern in more than half of EU countries and are the largest party group in the EU parliament.
