Bulgaria meets the requirements to adopt the euro as a currency from January 1, 2026.
The EU Commission now officially states this in a report on Wednesday.
”Congratulations Bulgaria”, writes Ursula von der Leyen in a press release.
”Thanks to the euro, Bulgaria's economy will become stronger, with more trade with euro colleagues, foreign direct investments, access to financing, quality jobs and real incomes”, writes von der Leyen.
A final decision on admission will now be taken by the Council of Ministers, after approval also from the EU's heads of state and government and the finance ministers of the euro countries.
