The European Commission's Vice-President Teresa Ribera openly calls the events in Gaza a genocide.

Spanish Ribera's words come in a speech to students in Paris on Thursday, according to the news agency Efe.

–The genocide in Gaza shows Europe's inability to act and speak with one voice, even when protests spread in European cities and 14 members of the UN Security Council demand an immediate ceasefire, says Ribera among other things in her

.

The statement is one of the sharpest so far from one of the EU Commission's members about Israel's warfare in Gaza. Ribera is the European social democrats' most prominent member of the Commission, with overall responsibility for climate and competition issues.

Ribera is condemned by Israel, which calls her a "megaphone for Hamas propaganda".

"Instead of echoing the blood libel of 'genocide' spread by Hamas, Ribera should demand that all hostages be released and that Hamas lay down its arms so that the war can come to an end", writes Oren Marmorstein, spokesperson for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, on X.
