The boards of the companies have already said yes to the takeover for $3.1 billion – equivalent to nearly 30 billion kronor. After a review of the competition issue, the commission now also says "unconditionally" yes to the deal.

The plans for the deal were announced in April last year. Now, a review by the US competition authorities remains.

SES is already one of the world's largest satellite operators for telecommunications. The purchase of Intelsat can sharpen the already tough competition on the market, where Starlink is leading. The company says it has 6,750 satellites in orbit around the Earth.

The Paris-listed operator Eutelsat is one of the players and Kuiper – a subsidiary of the American technology giant Amazon – is investing around $10 billion to get 3,200 satellites into orbit.
