The European Parliament voted on Tuesday to finally approve an agreement with the member states, which also means new binding targets for how much food waste in the EU should have decreased by 2030.
Detailed systems for clothing waste responsibility will now be developed by each EU country, within 30 months of the updated directive coming into force. Small businesses will have more time, while the second-hand industry is completely exempt.
"Finally, fast-fashion companies will have to pay for the waste mountains that their overproduction creates. Today's decision is a win for consumers and the climate," writes Swedish EU parliamentarian Alice Bah Kuhnke (Green party) in a comment via SMS.
