European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promises swift proposals for new sanctions against Iran.

"In close cooperation with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, further sanctions against those responsible for the reprisals will be proposed quickly," von der Leyen writes on X.

"The growing number of victims in Iran is appalling. We stand with the people of Iran who are bravely marching for their freedom," the Commission President writes.

More details on who will be affected by the sanctions are not yet available. The EU has previously imposed sanctions on more than 230 individuals and about 40 companies and organizations, including the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Demands have been made regularly to also classify the Guard as a terrorist organization. However, there is still no consensus on this among EU member states - according to the news site Euractiv, due to opposition from Austria and Hungary, among others.
