Pure electric cars reached a market share of 20.7 percent in June, up from 15.6 percent a year earlier, according to recent statistics on new car registrations.
Hybrid models were the most popular option, with a market share of 37.3 percent.
The combined market share of gasoline and diesel cars fell to 29.7 percent, from 37.8 percent.
Demand was driven by tax rebates and support programmes in many markets. However, to meet the 2030 emissions targets, an even stronger shift to electric vehicles is required, Acea points out.
"The direction is right. The speed is not," says Director General Sigrid de Vries in a press release.
