The statement of support comes ahead of today's meeting between representatives of the United States, Denmark and Greenland in Washington.
Greenland belongs to its people. It is up to Denmark and Greenland, and only them, to decide on issues that concern Denmark and Greenland, von der Leyen said at a press conference in Brussels.
According to her, the Commission is “in constant contact with the Danish government” to monitor developments. She also points out that Greenland is part of NATO and is subject to NATO’s principles of “one for all and all for one.”
For me, it is important that the Greenlanders know that we respect their will and interests and that they can trust us, the Commission President said.
