Wegovy is the first approved weight-loss drug in tablet form in the EU.
"This is more than a legislative milestone. It is a step towards better and lasting health for people with obesity and a powerful societal response to one of Europe's biggest health challenges," says Mike Doustdar, CEO of Novo Nordisk, in a press release.
In injection form, Wegovy is approved for patients from the age of twelve. In tablet form, it is intended only for adults, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) wrote in May.
At the same time, the European Commission has also approved a high-dose version of Wegovy as an injection, with a dose of 7.2 milligrams.
