EU and UK seek closer defence ties ahead of November summit

The EU and the UK are working to strengthen defence cooperation ahead of the November summit, says EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

According to Kallas, it is important for the UK to be more integrated into European defence cooperation.

“I would like to see us strengthen the UK's opportunities to participate in our civilian and military missions. But negotiations are ongoing, and there are still two weeks until the summit,” she says at a press conference in Brussels with British Defence Minister Wes Streeting.

For the UK, it is crucial that NATO remains the most important defence organisation, Streeting says.

The upcoming summit in Brussels is being held after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that a new referendum on EU membership could be an option in the future, though not during the current term of office.
