EU and Trump Hold Positive Customs Talks Aiming for Quick Trade Settlement

EU hopes for a quick settlement with the USA on tariffs and terms of trade. "Good conversations" have been held over the weekend between the Commission's President Ursula von der Leyen and the USA's President Donald Trump, according to a spokesperson.

EU boss Ursula von der Leyen spoke on the phone with Trump on Sunday, says spokesman Stefan De Keersmaecker at a press briefing on Monday.

However, many details about the content of the conversation are not given.

– We have made good progress in our talks. Our goal is still to reach an agreement before July 9, says trade spokesman Olof Gill.

”My email inbox is full”

According to the US Finance Minister Scott Bessent, the Trump administration will present several news about trade agreements during the next two days.

My email inbox is full of new trade offers, he says to the TV channel CNBC.

The statement is made after the White House over the weekend announced that letters will be sent to "some of our trading partners" with warnings that promised tariffs will be introduced from August 1, unless the talks move forward.

What it means for the EU, the Commission does not want to speculate about yet.

– We do not comment on letters that we have not yet received. And we do not comment on comments from the US leadership. Right now, no meetings are planned. But it can change with short notice, says Olof Gill.

EU has prepared countermeasures

The US has since Donald Trump took office as president introduced a long list of new tariffs on EU countries - both general tariffs of 10 percent on all EU goods, but also 25 percent tariffs on cars and car parts and 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Trump has threatened to raise the general tariffs if an agreement cannot be made.

The EU has so far chosen to refrain from countermeasures, but has prepared countermeasures in the form of tariffs on a long list of goods from the US.
