Following requests from around 20 EU member states, the European Commission and Sweden are supporting an invitation for Afghan officials to come to Brussels for discussions. The aim is to find technical solutions for how deportations to Afghanistan could be carried out.

Lisa Owen, country director of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), is skeptical, however.

"Deporting Afghans back to a country where almost half the population cannot support themselves is not migration policy - it is a decision that could cost lives," Owen said, according to the AFP news agency.

It is not yet clear when the meeting will be held or who will participate.
