"Both sides agreed that measures for increased market access and initiatives can help balance the trade relationship," said a joint statement from EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao following Monday's discussions.
"Today's discussions were intense, focused and constructive. I believe we are starting to understand each other better on the structural issues that need to be addressed," Sefcovic said at a brief press conference.
The meeting comes at a time when both the European Commission and the EU's heads of state and government have recently held internal discussions on how the EU should respond to the growing trade deficit with China.
