Federal forces captured the Tigray regional capital, Mekele, over the weekend after the regional movement, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), fled the city. The conflict, which erupted on September 23, threatens to plunge Ethiopia back into full-scale civil war, as in 2020-2022.

The AFP news agency reported on Monday that a drone attack on a refugee camp in Sheraro, in western Tigray, killed at least eight people and seriously injured several others.

Re-elected Prime Minister Ahmed, who received the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his peace efforts with neighboring Eritrea, said in his acceptance speech that Ethiopia must be given access to a stretch of coastline. Ethiopia is cut off from the Red Sea by, among other things, Eritrea.
