The incident occurred after a goal in the first period. Another person was hit in the fall, but is not believed to have required hospital care, according to Pittsburgh's federal agency for public safety.
However, the game was never stopped and Pittsburgh defender and Swede Erik Karlsson managed to set up three goals during the match.
The final score was 6–3 to Pittsburgh. Afterwards, there were gloomy faces among the players who had just been reached by the news about the supporter.
"Does not feel right"
Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby reached 1,700 points thanks to a goal and two assists. He is the ninth NHL player to reach that milestone, and the fourth to do so for the same team, but his thoughts were with the injured supporter.
It does not feel right to stand and talk about points when you hear about something like that. Of course, our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, says Pittsburgh's team captain Sidney Crosby according to AP.
We are all here for a sport and for a match and when you hear about something like that, everything else is put aside, adds the team's coach Dan Muse.
Investigating the incident
In an official statement, the club says they are following the situation closely.
The police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall, which is the third in a row of similar incidents at a sports event in Pittsburgh this year. In May this year, a supporter fell over six meters over a railing during the baseball team's match. He was treated in the hospital for several days but recovered. As recently as last Saturday, an employee at the football team's home arena also fell over 15 meters in connection with their work.
