The information comes from Erdogan's close adviser and ally Mehmet Ucum, according to media outlets NTV and Cumhuriyet.

Ucum also notes that the election may be brought forward.

"If 360 members of parliament support the decision to call an election, it will be held on April 16, 2028," Ucum says.

Erdogan, 72, from the conservative Islamist AKP, was appointed prime minister in 2003. After legal changes that made the presidency executive, Erdogan was elected president in 2014, 2018 and 2023.

Opposition leader Özgür Özel is demanding elections, especially since Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was imprisoned in 2025 on charges including corruption. Imamoglu is considered the strongest candidate to challenge Erdogan.
