This is the first time coach Maresca has spoken out since news broke at the end of September that Manchester City had committed widespread financial breaches.

At a press conference ahead of this weekend's Premier League match against Liverpool, almost everything was about Man City being charged with more than 100 alleged financial violations between 2009 and 2018.

During that period, City won several league and cup titles.

Not tainted titles

Maresca, who joined the club this summer but previously worked there as an assistant coach, does not think the titles are tainted by the scandal.

Absolutely not, he says.

"I know what efforts were required of the players, the club and the coach, Pep Guardiola, at that time. I know what the club did to achieve its goals," he continues.

Using sham sponsorship agreements, Manchester City inflated its revenues by 11.9 billion kronor (about $1.1 billion) over nine seasons to give the impression that it had complied with the financial rules of the game.

The club risks being punished very harshly. There has been talk of relegating City from the Premier League, as well as other penalties ranging from heavy fines to significant points deductions.

Manchester City has appealed the verdict, and it is unclear when a penalty might be announced.

"What I can say is that it is an ongoing process. I have full confidence in the club," Maresca says.

In May 2022, then-coach Guardiola said he would leave City immediately if it were found that the club had lied to him about its financial situation.

"I feel I can talk about the whole situation when we have won the appeal. It is pure nonsense to talk about this now, because I do not have much information," Maresca says, adding that he is in dialogue with City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

I have of course spoken to the club. We all feel confident.

Rested Haaland ready

Enzo Maresca expects a tough return to Premier League action at Anfield against Liverpool. Star player Erling Haaland is ready to play.

"He's doing well. He had two or three days off (after Norway's international match) and went to Marbella to recover," Maresca said.
