In December 2023, the 23-year-old and a colleague were to construct a winter road over a marsh in Örnsköldsvik municipality on behalf of an entrepreneur who was a subcontractor to SCA.
But the excavator ended up on a small tarn that was not marked on any map, and the machine went through the ice and tipped over so that the driver's cab ended up under water and the man drowned.
The entrepreneur is convicted of work environment crime involving causing another person's death. Ångermanland District Court believes that the man was responsible for the work environment at the site and should have marked the tarn.
He is sentenced to a conditional sentence and is forced to pay damages of just over 400,000 kronor to the estate and relatives. His company will also have to pay a corporate fine of 1.5 million.
The man has denied the crime and opposed the damages.
