The decision was made because of the acute threat to which cultural properties are exposed in the ongoing conflict in the region, the National Heritage Board said in a press release.
Protection has already been provisionally strengthened in Lebanon for, among other things, the World Heritage sites of Baalbek and Tyre. The updated list includes several mosques in Tripoli, the national library in Beirut, and the historical center of Saida.
The temporary measure entails increased international attention and stricter obligations on the parties to the conflict to avoid harm.
