The aim of the rule is to eliminate the stigma of goalkeepers stopping play for tactical reasons. The test will take place during the coming season in the five highest divisions on the men's side and the two highest women's leagues.
The coach may designate an outfield player who must leave the field immediately when the goalkeeper is receiving treatment. The player is unavailable for at least one minute after play resumes.
There are a number of exceptions. The rule does not apply if the goalkeeper receives a free kick and needs immediate treatment, if treatment is needed after a collision between a goalkeeper and an outfield player, or if the goalkeeper is bleeding.
Corrected version: Changed the title to nine outfield players.
