The fungicides fludioxonil and cyprodinil, classified as endocrine disruptors by the European Food Safety Authority, were found to be well below the limits that are intended to ensure that consumers are not exposed to risks.
"Therefore, I feel quite confident in saying that there is no risk of endocrine-disrupting effects for consumers," says Anneli Widenfalk, toxicologist at the Swedish Food Agency, to Syre.
Joëlle Rüegg, professor of organismal biology at Uppsala University, still finds it worrying.
"If you're going to use the precautionary principle, you don't want any of these chemicals on your strawberries," she says.
