The star striker Isaac Kiese Thelin was the second MFF player to be subjected to racist abuse when he, Ekong and other substitutes conducted an extra training session on the pitch after the match at the 3 Arena in Stockholm last Wednesday.

A group of home supporters had stayed behind in the stands.

I heard applause directed at me. It's a shame that it happens in 2025. But what can you do, says Ekong, according to Aftonbladet, Expressen and TV4 Fotbollskanalen, after Tuesday's 2-0 win in the Allsvenskan at home against Öster.

"Most shocked"

On Monday, MFF announced that the club had filed a police report on incitement to racial hatred.

I was most shocked. I looked at Isaac and he looked at me. I thought: "This can't happen", says Ekong, who last year made his debut for the Swedish U21 national team.

The 22-year-old, who was recruited from Serie A club Empoli last winter, chose to speak out.

I confronted the individual who made the monkey sounds. It got a bit heated. He hid, because he knew he had done wrong, says he.

The club asked the players if they wanted a police report to be filed. Ekong was initially hesitant.

"Must put a stop to it"

I said no at first, but then I talked to Isaac, who is a big figure in Swedish football. He told me that we must put a stop to this, says he.

In connection with the club's announcement that a police report had been filed, MFF wrote on their website:

"Malmö FF views all forms of racism extremely seriously, it violates both Swedish law and Malmö FF's values and is something we actively work to eliminate from both our football stands and our society".
