"All roles are physically demanding, but I dare say this was fun. Interesting, challenging, new," she tells TT.
In “Bugonia,” Stone plays a tough businesswoman who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists who believe she is an alien and has been placed on Earth to prepare for the planet’s destruction.
“Understand each other”
This is the fourth film that Emma Stone has made with Yorgos Lanthimos as director, and as usual they do the interview together.
"We communicate so well as people. We understand each other. Yorgos brings such incredibly interesting material, it's the stories and characters that resonate with me," says Stone.
She admits that filming was tough, but says:
What I was most focused on was the dialogue, when we were sitting at the dinner table and rehearsing lines. It was a lot of fun.
The film – a remake of the South Korean film “Save the Green Planet!” (2003) – contains, in typical Lanthimos style, dark humor and bloody violence. How it ends will not be revealed here, but Stone says:
There are those who feel devastated by the ending. I feel hopeful. But that depends on who you are. Every individual has their own experience, and I love movies that have an ending like that.
“I don’t preach”
Lanthimos, who previously directed Stone in “The Favourite,” “Poor Things” and “Kinds of Kindness,” believes the film can “energize people.”
– I don't preach, I don't say what's right or wrong, I show things. That's the best you can do. If you can also be entertaining, it's possible that the film will survive and can start a thought process that takes the viewer further.
He notes that conspiracy theories are more prevalent today thanks to new technology and globalization.
We have to be more careful with information, with what we believe in. We have to open up to others, we have to listen to each other, says Lanthimos.
He believes that greater personal responsibility is required to address all conspiracy theories.
There is such a deep divide now between different groups that it makes it difficult to get out of the bubble. And the divide is growing with technology.
