Forsberg's team beat Orlando, in the playoff match that secured a final spot, with 1–0 away on Saturday evening, local time.
The 33-year-old Forsberg delivered a fine free kick in front of the goal in the first half, which the Belgian Dante Vanzeir almost poked in. At the beginning of the second half, Andres Reyes nodded in the winning goal.
The goal is set on the MLS title, Forsberg made clear already before the national team gathering in November, where he was selected again.
We knocked out the reigning champions Columbus and are a bit of an underdog. Both Miami and Cincinnati, two of the other big favorites, were eliminated, so our chances are great. If we win, it will be really big, said Forsberg then.
In the final on December 7, they will face Los Angeles Galaxy, who knocked out Seattle Sounders. This happened through a goal in the 87th minute by the Serbian striker Dejan Joveljic and a 1–0 win.
It is the second time in 29 years of league play that New York Red Bulls are in the final. A win in Los Angeles – Galaxy will play at home – on Saturday would be something extra.
