Emil Forsberg is back in the national football team. The New York Red Bulls midfielder takes a place in the World Cup qualifying squad as a replacement for Malmö FF's Taha Ali, who is injured.

34-year-old Forsberg has made 90 senior appearances for Sweden but has not been selected for the national team since the fall of 2024. But now he is back.

New national captain Graham Potter, who replaced the fired Jon Dahl Tomasson, has called up Forsberg as a replacement for Taha Ali, the MFF talent who is suffering from injury concerns, for the World Cup qualifying finale.

On Thursday, Emil Forsberg was seen training with the Allsvenskan Gais at Valhalla IP. However, he assured himself during the training that there was no talk of a sensational move to Gothenburg.

I live here, it's not that difficult. I wrote and asked if I could be here and I got it, it was nice. Now I was here today and then I'm going back to New York again to train there. It was a quick visit, Emil Forsberg told Aftonbladet.

In the same interview, he said that he had not heard anything from Graham Potter, but that he had a good feeling about the new national captain.

I think it could be great. He has a clear idea of what he wants to do. It's about getting everyone on board now. The most important thing for the national team now is to win matches.

Sweden gathers in Spain on Monday to recharge for the two final World Cup qualifying matches: Switzerland away next Saturday and Slovenia at home three days later.
