In an attempt to secure a Republican majority in the Senate, Musk donated the equivalent of SEK 1.5 billion (about $143 million) to the Senate Leadership Fund this summer - a so-called "super PAC" that is allowed to raise unlimited sums in support of political candidates.
The figures, which have not been made public before, were published by The New York Times. It is one of the largest political donations in US history, and more than Democrats collected from all donors in the same quarter.
Since the summer, Musk has funneled more than the equivalent of SEK 2.7 billion (about $257 million) to Republican groups to help them deal with the headwinds ahead of the midterm elections.
In total, he has donated the equivalent of around SEK 3.6 billion (about $343 million) during the 2025–2026 election cycle, compared with around SEK 2.8 billion (about $267 million) during the 2024 election.
