Östergren said the following about receiving the award:
"You can settle down for a short while and rest in the belief that you have done something sensible. But as soon as the joy has passed, which it probably does very quickly, you have to continue where you left off. The idea that conflicts can be resolved without weapons is one of those ideas that requires patient work to keep alive," he said in a press release.
The Eldh-Ekblad Peace Prize was established in 1960 in memory of Nils Eldh and Signe Ekblad-Eldh and is awarded by the Swedish Peace organization.
The prize money is 5,000 SEK.
