Before the match, there was speculation that Sweden could possibly afford to lose by a small margin and still advance to the playoffs.

Elanga's equaliser at 1-1 killed the speculation and secured qualification, but it was a goal that proved absolutely decisive.

It became clear when the group stage was complete. Without the goal, three points and a goal difference of minus one would not have been enough to advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

For example, Iran also had three points and a goal difference of zero, but was eliminated.

Now France awaits in the round of 16. The match will be played on Tuesday with kick-off at 11:00 pm.

If Sweden beats France, the winner of the match between Germany and Paraguay awaits.

1. Congo-Kinshasa – 4 points (+1 in goal difference)

2. Sweden – 4 points (0)

3. Ecuador – 4 points (0)

4. Ghana – 4 points (0)

5. Bosnia-Herzegovina – 4 points (–1)

6. Algeria – 4 points (–2)

7. Paraguay – 4 points (–2)

8. Senegal – 3 points (+2)

9. Iran – 3 points (0) – Eliminated

10. South Korea – 3 points (–1) – Eliminated

11. Scotland – 3 points (–3) – Eliminated

12. Uruguay – 2 points (–1) – Eliminated
