Dahl Tomasson released the squad for the World Championship qualifiers at home against Switzerland on October 10 and against Kosovo three days later – matches the national team must win to take home the group victory and secure a World Championship spot.
Three selected players stood out in the second round of the Champions League group stage.
+ Anthony Elanga was both a forward and a penalty kicker when Newcastle crushed Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels with 4–0.
+ Daniel Svensson scored Dortmund's leading goal at home against Athletic Bilbao.
+ Viktor Gyökeres pushed forward and hit the post, after which Gabriel Martinelli scored the rebound to 1–0 in Arsenal's 2–0 win over Olympiakos.
Took the chance
Elanga can put a heavier period behind him. The winger has received a lot of criticism for his performances lately and lost his place in Newcastle's starting eleven.
Now he got a new chance – and took it in the Champions League match at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.
Elanga's fine right cross resulted in an own goal by Union Saint-Gilloise. One of many strong actions by the 23-year-old. He also arranged the penalty that Anthony Gordon scored to 2–0 just before the break.
Elanga was substituted after 72 minutes and received an appreciative pat from manager Eddie Howe.
This was a very important win for us. Not just the three points, but also mentally. It was a team effort and it shows that we have a good selection of players. Even the substitutes made a difference. It's good for our morale, said Elanga to Uefa.
First goal
Viktor Gyökeres was involved in a lot in Arsenal's offense, especially in the first half. He created several opportunities but without getting a reward.
That did, however, Daniel Svensson when Dortmund beat Athletic Bilbao 4–1. The midfielder netted after 28 minutes, his first goal for the club in the Champions League.
More national team-related from tonight's matches:
+ Jordan Larsson played from the start when FC Copenhagen lost 0–2 in Baku against Karabach. The striker had a really sharp equalizing chance on a header halfway into the second half.
+ Roony Bardghji, who got a place in the national team squad for the first time, sat on Barcelona's bench at home against reigning champion Paris SG. Goncalo Ramos decided for PSG with his 2–1 goal in the end.
