El Salvador has offered to receive both deported migrants and convicted or already imprisoned individuals from the USA. This is stated by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after meeting President Nayib Bukele on site in the country.

Rubio describes the offer as an "unprecedented, extraordinary migration agreement".

We can send them there and then he puts them in his prisons, said Rubio about migrants arrested in the USA, and continued:

And he has also offered to do the same regarding dangerous criminals who are currently serving their sentences in the USA, even if they are US citizens or have residence permits.

The visit to El Salvador is one of several stops for Rubio in Central America, where the overall focus is on pressing friendly governments to do more to meet the demands of newly elected Donald Trump regarding tougher action on migration.

However, whether US citizens will actually end up in one of El Salvador's notorious prisons remains to be seen. A source within the Trump administration tells the AP news agency that they currently have no such plans, and that US citizens cannot be deported in that way according to current law.
