Albin Ekdal has hinted several times that his long playing career is coming to an end. Now he confirms it. On a personal level, it is difficult to put into words how it feels when your career is over, the 36-year-old tells SVT.

Djurgården's 0–0 match against IFK Gothenburg on Sunday afternoon was his last home match.

He made a substitution at the end of the game, the last one in front of the home crowd. The Allsvenskan finale away to Öster next Sunday will be his last match, if he is allowed to play.

I came home to my only team in my heart and got to play in front of supporters and friends, it's been amazing, he says.

Ekdal spent most of his career in foreign clubs and he was a regular starter in the national team for several years.

He moved abroad at the age of 19 and has played for Juventus, Bologna, Hamburg, Cagliari and Sampdoria, among others, and made 70 international appearances.

I am of course happy with what I have managed to achieve. Foreign professional for so long, many international matches and many matches in big leagues. At the end of the day I am very satisfied and proud, but I will always have a bit of sadness and disappointment in me, unfortunately that is how I am made. You can always do more. My time in Djurgården has not been as I hoped, even though I tried to give everything every day, he tells SVT.
